Hairspray is the story of a cheerful child named Tracy Turnblad, a would-be dancer who wants to earn a place on a neighbouring TV series named the Corny Collins Show. The show is in fact based on a Baltimore-based telly programme called the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.Tracy is unfamiliar in the dancing circle when she tries out, in spite of this she is selected for one of the dancing roles and against extremely long odds she becomes a dancing star more or less overnight. Tracy is glad by this newfound status, & she comes to a decision to apply her new found fame to help make positive developments to the show. The essential motive for these positive improvements relates to race. Tracy seeks to racially unite the show, & as one could imagine, she is faced with lots of opposition.Hairspray moved to London’s West End in 2007, opening for the media at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 11, before being opened to the paying public at its real opening on October the thirtieth, two thousand & seven. The theatrical production has had some renowned actors — Michael Ball takes the part of Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s very own mother, giving marvellous performance in this difficult female position, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop manager Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the West End features newcomer to the theatre stage, Leanne Jones, in the leading character of Tracy.Hairspray the musical play has got plenty of positive remarks from the media and show fans alike. Jacqueline remarked: “I have been to see the play four times now and I will be going back again next week & a few more times after that as well. I love the moment and wish they could stay on longer. Ben Ellis is fabulous as link & Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all stunning. The musical hairspray is easily my favourite, merely because it is bubbly & if you are feeling a tad bit unhappy then it is certain to make you feel a great deal better. I definitely give it a ten out of ten – I love it well done to everyone involved.
